White Cowboy Boots (GratiTUDE: 1 Year + 31 Days)

January 5, 2014

I own white cowboy boots. I bought them 6 years ago while I was visiting my brother in Houston, Texas, and then preceded to never wear them. But all that changed today.

Year 1 Day 31 white cowboy boots

I don’t know why I buy nice things and then decide that they’re too nice for me to actually use. It’s really counterproductive and unhelpful, but I do it all the time. I have beautiful, interesting things that I never wear because I decided at one point that they’re just too special to be worn in regular life and therefore need to be saved for special occasions. But after years of saving a dress or a pair of boots or a sweater for a future special occasion, it can seem like no event is ever special enough.

I’m trying to break out of this habit. I want to wear the nice things I have now. Even if there are no special events, I want to integrate the things I love into my life as it is now. I don’t want to wait anymore.

Tonight I wore my white cowboy boots to target. I picked up an ink cartridge and laundry detergent and felt pretty stylish while I did it.

What’s your gratiTUDE today?

What is a “GratiTUDE”?:

GratiTUDE is the general attitude of thankfulness and gratefulness.

What is “What’s Your GratiTUDE?”:

Every day, for as long as I can keep it going, I’m going to tell you something I’m grateful for. I want to do this because I want to remind myself how fortunate I am in a more concrete way. They will be small things, big things, meaningful things, and seemingly inconsequential things. They may repeat on some days if I happen to feel grateful for the same thing more than once. I’m not planning it or mapping it out. I’m just feeling grateful, publicly.  And I’d like you, if you’re feeling it, to do the same.

About the Author ()

Lillian's Test Kitchen is an online cooking web series. The recipes in this series are always grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and cane sugar-free. The recipes are also all (at this point) paleo. Some are vegan. Some are raw. I use the best ingredients I can find (and afford). But Lillian's Test Kitchen is not so much about food as it is about the experience of trying something you have never tried before and then finding the joy, comedy and laughter in those small moments in spite of and also often, because of dietary restrictions. My goal is to inspire others to take their health into their own hands and make their own food.

  1. Bravo, Lillian!! Wearing and using the special things instead of waiting should be a resolution for everyone! Erma Bombeck did a wonderful essay on this same topic long ago. And unlike many essays attributed to famous people, she really did write the essay (verified by Snopes), in usual Erma fashion. http://www.snopes.com/glurge/bombeck.asp

Happy New Year, dear! Final note, what if in 2014, you become known as that wonderful girl who wears those beautiful white cowboy boots? Wouldn’t that be fun? 😉

Happy new year, Shirley! I like the idea of this new reputation as a “wonderful girl who wears beautiful white cowboy boots”. I’m going to try to cultivate it.
